St. Clare
Feast Day: August 11
Patron of: Television, telephones, good weather, laundry, embroiderers
St. Clare was an early follower of St. Francis of Assisi, founding the Order of St. Clare, or “Poor Clares”, as the order is often called today. St. Clare had to literally run away from her parents to become a nun – they’d decided she was going to marry a rich man. St. Clare eventually became the abbess in charge of the community of women religious that had formed around her. She worked to emulate St. Francis in his austerity, actions and principles. There’s a story that St. Clare was once too sick to attend mass, and the celebration appeared on the wall of her cell; this is why she was made patroness of television.
St. Clare’s example of tenacity in the pursuit of simple austerity shows us how to deal with the temptation to take the easiest path.
